Za’atar is commonly used as a seasoning for meats, vegetables, and bread. It is also used as an ingredient in dips such as labneh or hummus.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons ground sumac

  • 2 tablespoons dried thyme

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper flakes (optional)

Directions

  • In a small bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well.
  • Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.
  • To use, sprinkle on bread or use as a seasoning for meat, vegetables, or dips.
