A scone is an individual round-shaped bun, typical of UK cuisine and originally from Scotland. It is a very common food in breakfasts and snacks both in the United Kingdom and in Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. In Scotland, the triangular portions of the flattened bread cake called the bannock (probably the ancestor of the scone) are also known as scones.
It is made with wheat, rye or oat flour, butter and yeast. It is usually served warm and open in the middle, and appears as an ingredient in high tea (afternoon tea) in Scotland.
Although the scone is traditionally round, it is also marketed as flatter triangles to save flour. The homemade scones can be round, triangular or square.

Ingredients
2 cups (250g) flour
3 tbsp sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3 tbsp butter
2/3 cup (150mL) milk
Directions
- In a bowl, add all your dry ingredients first: The flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
- Mix briefly.
- Now, cut in your butter. You can do this with two knives, a pastry cutter, or your hands, like I did.
- Finally add the milk and stir it in with a spoon. The dough should be quite sticky.
- Then, on a lined baking sheet, add a dusting of flour, and press the dough onto it, adding a bit of flour to the top.
- Then cut out the scones with a circle cutter. You can also use a cup.
- Cut them all out and remove the dough between the circles.
- Separate them a bit.
- Bake these at 425°F or 220°C for 12-15 minutes.
- Your English Scones is ready! These are lovely. They can be opened and are traditionally served with jam and clotted cream. In case you were wondering, these are very similar to buttermilk biscuits, but are made with a bit of sugar and with milk instead of buttermilk.
