Pita bread is made with simple ingredients such as flour, water, salt, and yeast. The dough is typically rolled out into thin, flat circles and then baked at a high temperature until it puffs up and forms a pocket in the center. The pockets can be filled with a variety of ingredients, such as hummus, falafel, or shawarma, making pita bread a versatile staple in many cuisines.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast

  • 1 1/4 cups warm water

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Directions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
  • In a separate small bowl, mix the active dry yeast and warm water. Stir until the yeast dissolves.
  • Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix everything together until it forms a dough.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Put the dough back in the mixing bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and put a baking sheet inside to heat up.
  • Divide the dough into 8-10 equal parts, and roll each piece into a ball.
  • On a floured surface, roll each ball into a circle about 6-7 inches in diameter and 1/4 inch thick.
  • Place the rolled-out circles on the preheated baking sheet and bake for about 5-6 minutes, until they puff up and the surface becomes lightly browned.
  • Take the pita bread out of the oven and cover them with a clean towel to keep them soft.
