Under the title “Olympism: A Modern Invention, An Ancient Heritage,” this exhibition offers an in-depth look at the making of this world-renowned sporting event.
The exhibition reveals how various French and Greek figures, in addition to Pierre de Coubertin, contributed to the establishment of the modern Olympic Games, drawing inspiration from the sporting competitions of ancient Greece.
Among these visionaries is Émile Gilliéron, a prominent Swiss-born cartoonist who, influenced by contemporary archaeological excavations, created the trophies for the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 and the Mesolympiad of 1906.
A collection to celebrate the Olympic Games
An exceptional loan from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation allows the Louvre Museum to display the first Olympic cup, known as the “Bréal Cup”, conceived by university professor Michel Bréal and created by a French goldsmith for the winner of the first modern Olympic marathon.
This exhibition, which will run from April 24 to September 16, 2024, is part of the cultural programming associated with the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
