From June 9 to August 13, the 2023 Firefly Season will take place in Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala, and if you are thinking of visiting these magical and luminous inhabitants of the forest, this is what you need to know.

How is the sighting?

Fireflies are insects that emit bioluminescence as part of their courtship for reproduction and during the summer, in the rainy season, they can be seen shining at night and producing a magical moment.

The natural phenomenon occurs because the males send signals to the females, which, having no wings, rest almost on the ground and among the fallen leaves.

One of the best-known places, and with a tourist infrastructure aimed at conservation, is the Firefly Sanctuary, in Tlaxcala, which is about two hours from Mexico City.

This year, the entrance to the forest for the sighting will cost 350 pesos per person (minors in arms do not pay) and includes: access to the sighting point, tour with a certified guide and use of toilets.

The tours of the trails begin at 7:00 p.m., since daylight is almost nil, as are the common sounds of the surrounding towns. With your guide, you will walk for about an hour until you reach the area where the fireflies gather, ready for their mating ritual.

The show lasts about 40 minutes, once it is over, the groups must leave the trails.

Recommendations for your trip

For the walk, wear comfortable, non-slip and waterproof shoes, since due to the rains you could find mud and/or puddles.

Wear a warm, waterproof jacket in dark tones, without reflective or fluorescent details.

It is recommended to bring an extra change of clothes and shoes in case of rain.

It is not allowed to enter the Firefly Sanctuary with umbrellas, flashlights, horns, cameras with flash, pets, or the use of cell phones and mosquito repellents.

The phenomenon is natural and its success is not guaranteed.

If they are afraid of the dark or feel uncomfortable, it is better not to do the activity.

The light alters the reproduction cycle of the fireflies, it is impossible to photograph the phenomenon if you do not have the necessary equipment, therefore the photographs are restricted to professionals.

The tour is done in silence.

If you bring children, they must be well behaved and respect the rules.
