Bread and butter pudding is a traditional British dessert made from stale bread, butter, custard, and sugar. It’s a comforting, warming dish that’s perfect for using up leftover bread.

To make the pudding, slices of bread are buttered and arranged in a dish with sultanas or raisins. A sweet custard mixture made from eggs, milk, and sugar is poured over the bread and left to soak in. The pudding is then baked in the oven until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

Bread and butter pudding can be served warm or cold, and is often accompanied by cream, custard or ice cream. It’s a simple yet delicious dessert that’s been enjoyed in Britain for many years.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread

  • 50g butter

  • 100g sultanas or raisins

  • 2 eggs

  • 500ml milk

  • 50g caster sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Nutmeg (optional)

  • Whipped cream (optional)

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4.
  • Butter each slice of bread and cut into triangles. Arrange the bread triangles in a large ovenproof dish, alternating with sultanas or raisins.
  • In a bowl, beat the eggs with the caster sugar and vanilla extract until well combined. Gradually stir in the milk.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the bread and press down with a spoon to ensure that all the bread is soaked in the liquid. Leave to stand for 10-15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  • Grate a little nutmeg over the top of the pudding, if desired.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream, if desired.
