Garam masala is a spice mix widely used in Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Nepalese, and other Southeast Asian cuisines. Its composition varies from one region to another, even from one family to another, so there is no “original recipe”. Depending on the composition, the garam masala can be slightly spicy. The components are roasted until fragrant and then ground together.
Garam masala can be used alone or with other seasonings, to flavor marinades, dressings, salads, stir fries, soups and even in desserts such as cakes and cookies.
In Hindi language, masala means ‘spice mixture’ and garam, ‘hot’, since according to Ayurvedic medicine, its ingredients cause the body temperature to rise.
