Bratwurst is a sausage typical of Germany and other Central European countries. It is mainly made from pork or veal and seasoned with herbs and spices such as onion, garlic, nutmeg and white pepper. Bratwurst is usually cooked in boiling water or roasted on a stove or barbecue and is served in a rye bread or roll, usually accompanied by mustard, sauerkraut or other condiments.


  • 1 package bratwurst (about 4-6 sausages)

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 small onion, sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds

  • 2 teaspoons paprika

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 4-6 hot dog buns

  • Your choice of toppings (e.g. sauerkraut, mustard, onions, cheese)


  • Place the bratwurst in a large pot and add the water, onion, garlic, caraway seeds, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes, or until the bratwurst are cooked through.
  • Remove the bratwurst from the pot and place them on the buns.
  • Add your desired toppings and serve.
