The ingredients can vary, but the traditional ambrosia salad often includes:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mini marshmallows

  • 1 cup shredded sweetened coconut

  • 1 cup mandarin orange segments (canned or fresh)

  • 1 cup pineapple chunks (canned or fresh)

  • 1/2 cup maraschino cherries (drained and halved)

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1 cup whipped cream (or whipped topping like Cool Whip)

  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional for added crunch)

  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar (optional, if you prefer the salad sweeter)

Directions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the mini marshmallows, shredded coconut, mandarin orange segments, pineapple chunks, and maraschino cherries. Toss everything gently to mix evenly.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the sour cream and whipped cream together. If using powdered sugar, you can add it to the cream mixture to sweeten it slightly. Adjust the sweetness according to your preference.
  • Pour the cream mixture over the fruit and marshmallow mixture. Gently fold everything together until all the ingredients are coated with the creamy dressing.
  • If using chopped nuts, sprinkle them over the top of the salad and gently fold them in.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. Chilling allows the flavors to meld together and makes the salad more refreshing.
  • When ready to serve, give the Ambrosia Salad a quick stir and serve chilled. You can garnish with additional coconut or maraschino cherries if desired.
