The cinnamon roll is a roll (a type of sweet bread) created in the 1920s in Sweden and Denmark. Although the cinnamon roll was known since the second half of the 19th century, it was only baked in homes with sufficient economic resources, due to the cost of its ingredients.
After the First World War, and the existing shortage of refined flour, sugar and cinnamon, new types of sweet bread appeared in pastry shops. The cinnamon roll is not to be confused with the Wienerbrød.
Today, it is a typical pastry specialty of the United States and northern Europe. In Sweden it is known as “kanelbulle”. It is a very popular muffin to accompany coffee. Since 1999, Cinnamon Roll Day has been celebrated every October 4.
