Vegan pizza offers a cruelty-free option for those following a vegan diet or looking to reduce their consumption of animal products while still enjoying a classic favorite.

Ingredients

  • Dough
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • Toppings
  • 1 cup marinara sauce or pizza sauce

  • 1 cup vegan cheese (such as shredded vegan mozzarella or your favorite brand)

  • Assorted vegetable toppings (such as sliced bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, etc.)

  • Vegan meat substitutes (such as vegan sausage, vegan pepperoni, tofu, or tempeh), optional

  • Fresh basil leaves, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Directions

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  • Stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to preheat as well.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into two equal portions.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out each portion of dough into a circle or rectangle of your desired thickness.
  • Transfer the rolled-out dough to a pizza peel or lightly greased baking sheet.
  • Spread half of the marinara or pizza sauce evenly over each pizza crust.
  • Sprinkle half of the vegan cheese over each pizza.
  • Add your desired vegetable toppings and vegan meat substitutes evenly over the pizzas.
  • If using a pizza stone, carefully transfer the assembled pizza onto the hot pizza stone in the preheated oven.
  • If using a baking sheet, place it directly in the oven.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the toppings are bubbly and cooked through.
  • Once baked, remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Garnish with fresh chopped basil leaves if desired.
