Tomato sauce is a type of sauce made from tomatoes and typically used as a base for other sauces, or as a topping for pasta, pizza, and other dishes. It is usually made by sautéing onions and garlic in olive oil, adding crushed or diced tomatoes, and then simmering the mixture until it thickens and the flavors meld together. Other seasonings such as salt, pepper, and herbs like basil and oregano are often added to the sauce to enhance its flavor.
