The exhibition “We are what there is”, by Carlos Álvarez-Montero, will be presented at the OJO gallery | Versailles, in Mexico City, from January 18 to March 2, 2024.

For almost 30 years Carlos Álvarez-Montero has taken his camera to different latitudes to follow the trail of what survives as authentic in a world that seeks to standardize our vital powers.

“We are what there is” is a question about what we are and how we approach what we seek to be. The exhibition explores the liquid identity of what is Mexican, always in constant movement and adaptation, in a way that is not definitive, that changes and transforms depending on who and how they look at it, an identity constructed by each person based not only on their own history, geography, culture or economy, but also from what is shared: that curious syncretization that always makes interesting the way in which Mexicans “we make our” –o we tropicalize– practically whatever we want, turning it into something indisputably Mexican.

The work of Carlos Álvarez-Montero questions: What does it mean to be Mexican?, because for the artist identity has nothing to do with nationality, but with constant change and exploration.

This exhibition shows portraits of the devotees of San Judas Tadeo or the little black angel, a pyramid made of sound horns, a short about the procession of the Virgin of Guadalupe carried out by a group of Mexicans passionate about low-ride bicycles in New York , still lifes that the author made with objects found in houses in Tepito, among much more.

“Somo los que hay” can be visited from January 18 to March 2, 2024, from Wednesday to Friday from 12:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays from 12:00 to 17:00. Tickets can be purchased online at official page of OJO MX ARTE
