On August 24, the Mexico City Museum opened its doors to the exhibition “El Negro de Beatriz Zamora,” an exhibition that offers a deep retrospective of the work of the renowned Mexican artist. With more than four decades dedicated to exploring the philosophical and spiritual depth of the color black, Zamora invites us to immerse ourselves in a journey where this color transcends its visual character to become a transcendental experience.
The exhibition is made up of 94 pieces in which Zamora used various materials such as coal, obsidian and semi-precious stones. The highlight is painting #4 from the series “The Earth” (1976-1977), which marked the beginning of an ethical dialogue with the cultural heritage of Mexico and Latin America. This set of works not only celebrates Zamora’s artistic depth, but also invites us to reflect on the relationship between humans and the cosmos, exploring the multiplicity of meanings that black can reveal.
Beatriz Zamora, born in Mexico City, is a prominent figure in the contemporary art scene. From her beginnings in 1952 under the tutelage of muralist José Hernández Delgadillo, to her training at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1972, Zamora has challenged artistic conventions with her unique approach. From 1977 onwards, she dedicated herself exclusively to the use of the color black in her work, transforming it into a metaphor for the origin of existence, in a conjunction between the ancestral past and absolute modernity.
Throughout her career, Beatriz Zamora has faced significant challenges, including ostracism and self-exile in New York in 1980. However, her work has been internationally recognized, with more than 100 solo and 250 group exhibitions, as well as numerous awards such as the Legion of Honor Medal of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1977 and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship in 2002.
“El Negro de Beatriz Zamora” will be open to the public at the Mexico City Museum, offering a unique opportunity to explore the work of one of the most profound and original artists of our time. This exhibition not only celebrates art, but also offers a reflection on the very essence of what it means to be human and our connection to the infinite.
In addition, in the coming weeks there will be various activities such as a discussion, book presentation, a guided tour, among others, which will enrich the experience of visitors.
