Once again, the European Union modified the start of the implementation of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which would initially come into force in 2019, however, it has been postponed.
According to the page of ETIASthe European Union notes that this new travel requirement will come into force in mid-2025, and will apply to travelers from 60 countries, including Mexico.
The ETIAS It will be valid for 3 years, or until the passport expires, and will allow multiple trips for short-term stays for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Each one, within countries of the European Union or the Schengen area.
This system will simplify the immigration process and is also designed to improve border security.
However, the ETIAS will not guarantee your entry, so upon arrival, a border guard will ask for your passport and the documents and requirements necessary to enter.
The countries of the Traveling Republic that must process the ETIAS are the following:
After landing in their selected entry state, travelers can visit any of the 22 European Union member countries that are part of Schengen, as well as non-EU EFTA countries such as Iceland and Norway.
ETIAS also extends to the Canary Islands and Madeira.
To travel to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania you will also need ETIAS, as they are EU countries in the process of joining the Schengen Area.
The requirements to process ETIAS are:
- Valid passport
- Credit/debit card
- Email address.
The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the expected date of arrival in Europe.
The process is carried out online and you only have to fill out a form, as well as make the payment. The ETIAS price will be 7 euros. The form requests data such as:
- Personal data: full name and date of birth, nationality and gender
- Identification documents: passport details Contact information: email and phone number
- Destination country in Europe
- Personal questions: academic training, employment situation
- Security questions: they will be asked if they have traveled to active conflict zones, criminal records, among others.
- Family relationship with a European citizen
It is important to note that most requests are processed within minutes, however it is possible that the request may take longer to process; In that case you will receive a decision within four days. Please note that this period could be extended up to 14 days if you are asked for additional information or documentation, or up to 30 days if you are asked for an interview.
Given the above, it is recommended that you make your request in advance.
