Sesame chicken is a popular Chinese-American dish that features crispy, breaded chicken pieces coated in a savory sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds. It is known for its combination of sweet and savory flavors. The dish typically consists of diced or sliced chicken breast that has been marinated, lightly battered, and deep-fried until crispy. The sauce is often made with ingredients such as soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, vinegar, and sometimes ketchup or hoisin sauce. It is then tossed with the fried chicken pieces and garnished with sesame seeds.

Ingredients
1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Vegetable oil for frying
- Sauce
1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/4 cup water
- Garnish
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
2 green onions, chopped
Directions
- In a bowl, combine the cornstarch, flour, salt, and black pepper. Toss the chicken pieces in the mixture until evenly coated.
- In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the chicken in batches for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, cornstarch, and water until smooth.
- In a clean skillet, heat the sauce over medium heat until it thickens, stirring constantly. This should take about 2-3 minutes.
- Add the fried chicken pieces to the skillet and toss them in the sauce until evenly coated. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Once the chicken is coated in the sauce, remove the skillet from heat. Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped green onions over the top for garnish.
- Serve the sesame chicken hot with steamed rice or noodles. Enjoy!
