Here’s how you can make pulled pork in a slow cooker:

  • Pork shoulder or pork butt roast

  • Seasonings (such as salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and brown sugar)

  • BBQ sauce (optional)

  • Liquid (such as water, broth, or apple cider vinegar)

  • Season the pork: Start by rubbing the pork shoulder with your choice of seasonings. You can use a pre-made dry rub or create your own by mixing various spices and seasonings. This step is essential for flavoring the meat.
  • Sear the meat (optional): While not always necessary, some recipes call for searing the meat in a hot pan to create a flavorful crust. This step can add extra depth to the flavor of the pulled pork.
  • Place in the slow cooker: Put the seasoned or seared pork shoulder into the slow cooker. If you want, you can add some liquid, like water or broth, to the bottom of the slow cooker to keep the meat moist during cooking.
  • Cook on low and slow: Set the slow cooker to the low heat setting and let it cook for 8-10 hours. Cooking the meat slowly and at a low temperature allows it to become tender and easy to shred.
  • Shred the pork: Once the pork is done cooking, use two forks to pull it apart. The meat should easily shred into tender pieces. Remove any excess fat and bone if necessary.
  • Add BBQ sauce (optional): You can mix the shredded pork with your favorite barbecue sauce to add a smoky, sweet, and tangy flavor. This step is optional and depends on your personal preference.
  • Serve: Pulled pork is often served in sandwiches, on buns, or as a topping for baked potatoes, salads, or tacos. It’s a versatile dish that can be customized to suit your tastes.
