The National Museum of Art, MUNAL, in Mexico City, presents Vanguard Dialogues, an exhibition that presents a fascinating dialogue between the greatest exponents of European post-impressionist art and masters of Mexican art.
This exhibition features works from the Pearlman Collection, one of the most important of the post-impressionist period, along with pieces from the MUNAL collection. Visitors will admire works by Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Édouard Manet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Amedeo Modigliani; as well as key figures of Mexican art such as Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, Dr. Atl and Roberto Montenegro.
The exhibition is not just about appreciating great works of art, but about reflecting on the shared influences and aesthetic sensibilities that connect these two worlds.
Henry Pearlman, a New York businessman and passionate collector, devoted much of his life to bringing together works by artists who, although working in different cultural contexts, shared a drive to break the boundaries of traditional art. The European and Mexican artists on display here each explore, in their own way, the themes of modernity, personal expression and the transformation of the social and cultural landscape.
The works that can be seen are:
- Vincent van Gogh’s Tarascan Stagecoach
- Portrait of Adolfo Best Maugard by Diego Rivera
- Amedeo Modigliani by Jean Cocteau
- Loma verde by Joaquín Clausell
- Alfred Sisley’s River View
- Still life by Roberto Montenegro
- Still life by Camille Pissarro
- The cloud of Gerardo Murillo, Dr. Atl
- Mount Sainte-Victoire by Paul Cézanne
- The bedroom of José Clemente Orozco
- Mesalina de Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
- Seated nude woman by Manuel Rodríguez Lozano
- After the Bath (Woman Drying Herself) by Edgar Degas
- Lady on the balcony by Felix Parra
- Young man with a round hat by Édouard Manet

In addition to the exhibition, there will be a series of educational activities that include art labs to establish dialogues between the works, characters and themes through dramatization, dance, music and plastic arts.
