To make a marble cake, you typically start with a basic cake batter recipe and then divide it into two portions. One portion is kept as vanilla-flavored, while the other portion is mixed with cocoa powder or melted chocolate to create the chocolate-flavored batter. Here’s a basic recipe for making marble cake:

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup whole milk

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 oz semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan or a bundt cake pan.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. This can take 2-3 minutes using an electric mixer.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Divide the cake batter into two equal portions in separate bowls.
  • In one of the bowls, mix in the unsweetened cocoa powder until it is fully incorporated.
  • Begin by spooning alternating dollops of the vanilla and chocolate batters into the prepared pan.
  • Once all the batter is in the pan, use a knife or skewer to gently swirl and create a marbled pattern. Don’t overmix; you want distinct swirls.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  • Allow the marble cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
