Homemade pizza refers to pizza that is made from scratch in your own kitchen rather than ordering it from a pizzeria or buying a frozen pizza. Making homemade pizza allows you to have full control over the ingredients, flavors, and toppings, resulting in a customized and potentially healthier pizza.

Here’s a basic recipe for homemade pizza, including instructions for making the pizza dough, sauce, and assembling the pizza. Feel free to customize it with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

  • For the Pizza Dough
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • For the Pizza Sauce
  • 1 can (14-ounce) crushed tomatoes

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • For Toppings (Optional)
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese

  • Pepperoni slices

  • Sliced bell peppers

  • Sliced onions

  • Sliced mushrooms

  • Sliced olives

  • Fresh basil leaves

Directions

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center.
  • Pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into the well. Stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook for this step.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
  • In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer the sauce on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust the seasonings if needed.
  • Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) or as high as your oven will go.
  • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 2 equal portions for 2 medium-sized pizzas or leave it whole for a larger pizza.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to your desired thickness. You can make it thin and crispy or thicker for a softer crust.
  • Place the rolled-out dough on a pizza stone or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Spread a layer of pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a border for the crust.
  • Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce.
  • Add your favorite toppings, such as pepperoni, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, etc.
  • Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown, and the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.
  • Remove the pizza from the oven, let it cool slightly, and sprinkle fresh basil leaves on top if desired.
  • Slice the homemade pizza, serve it hot, and enjoy!
