Imagine finding yourself in a place full of great green valleys, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, turquoise blue lakes, impressive waterfalls, caves and ancient bridges, all from the comfort of your seat on board a train.

Welcome to one of the tours that you must definitely do at least once in your life: the Glacier Express, a panoramic train that crosses the majestic Swiss Alps.

Our journey begins at the charming Zurich train station, from where we will take a regional train to the Chur stop, the starting point of our adventure aboard the Glacier Express. Get your luggage ready and pay attention to the departure platform, since an imposing red wagon will be the symbol of the beginning of this wonderful experience. The route we will follow will be from Chur to Zermatt, a journey that will take us around six hours, but which will be full of snowy landscapes and impressive alpine scenery.

Once inside the train, you will receive headphones that you can connect to receive interesting information about the places that we will see during the tour, as well as information about the economic activities of Switzerland and the animal species that inhabit the Alps.

Sit by the window to fully enjoy the panoramic views. In addition, you will be able to taste a wide variety of à la carte dishes and toast with a glass of wine while the landscape unfolds before your eyes. It is worth mentioning that the train has two categories: first class offers more spacious seats and a calmer environment, but any seat on the train will allow you to enjoy the incredible views that this trip offers.

One of the stops we will make will be in Andermatt, an ideal place to stretch your legs and take a souvenir photo with the snow-capped mountains in the background. Depending on the season in which you travel, be prepared for the cold when you get off the train.

One of the most amazing moments of the tour occurs when the train goes through a dark tunnel to emerge on the snowy peak of an Alp. The instant in which the train lights up with the white landscape is impressive and amazes travelers of all nationalities.

Our journey will come to an end at the Zermatt train station, where our next adventure will begin at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn.

An important piece of advice is to reserve your place on the train well in advance, since it is usually a highly demanded experience. Also make sure to check the weather conditions during your month of visit and bring the appropriate clothing to fully enjoy your stay in Switzerland. You cannot miss the opportunity to try the culinary delights of the country, from its famous sausages and beers to its exquisite pastries, but above all, you cannot leave without trying the delicious Swiss chocolate, which will be one of the highlights of your trip.

The Glacier Express has several stops, so plan yours and reserve your accommodation in advance. This tour is especially ideal if you are visiting several cities in Europe, since you can easily connect with trains to Italy or France.

Get ready to live an unforgettable experience on the best panoramic train in the world, the Glacier Express in Switzerland!

Practical guide for your visit to Switzerland:
  1. Costs: Costs in Switzerland vary depending on the season. On our trip in May, we paid close to 200 Swiss francs. To save money, we recommend bringing your own snacks to enjoy during the train journey. Also, keep in mind that on most Swiss trains you can pay by card, which is very convenient. You can reserve your seats in advance on the website and be very careful to also reserve the transport ticket.
  2. Language: Switzerland is a multilingual country, with French and German as the main languages. However, if you are not fluent in any of these languages, don’t worry, English is widely spoken and will allow you to communicate easily with most people, especially in tourist areas.
  3. Accommodation: To get the most out of your Glacier Express experience, we recommend spending at least one night in Zurich, Chur, or St. Mortiz before boarding the train. These cities have a lot to offer and will allow you to be ready and rested for the trip. Also, consider reserving at least one night at your final destination after taking the train, so you can fully explore the region and enjoy all it has to offer. Remember to book your accommodation in advance to ensure availability and get the best rates.
  4. Transport: Traveling on the Glacier Express is a beautiful experience, but it is also important to plan your arrival and departure from Switzerland well. If you’re coming from a nearby city, like we did from Paris, taking a train to Zurich might be a convenient option. And at the end of your visit to Switzerland, you can consider a train to Milan, in Italy, to continue your European adventure. For short transfers, we suggest using the regional trains, as they are cheaper and will offer you spectacular panoramic views. In addition, it is very easy to book the tickets directly in the machines of the station!
  5. We hope these practical tips help you enjoy your visit to Switzerland to the fullest and have an unforgettable experience aboard the Glacier Express. Bon voyage!
