Today I bring you a new article from the Germany Christmas Marketsspecifically that of Dachau, a city of 43,000 inhabitants belonging to the state of Bavaria and located just 10 minutes from Munich.
As the objective of this room trip to germany was to get to know other Christmas markets different from the ones I already knew in 2004, 2007 and 2008 (such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Berlin, Nuremberg…) and Dachau had one of them that was very charming and tiny and we also wanted to take a detour of our Christmas route for a few hours to get closer to meeting some concentration camphe Dachau Christmas market It was the perfect option.
Dachau concentration camp
Dachau is inseparably linked to the concentration camp that the Nazis built in 1933. It was the first Nazi concentration camp in the world and served as a model for those that followed. Some 200,000 prisoners were held here.
Visit to the Dachau Christmas Market
On this last day of the trip to Germany, we had decided to visit four Christmas markets, something truly difficult to achieve since all of them, no matter how big or small, seem to have been designed to enchant and force you to stay.
That morning we began visiting the Nördlingen Christmas Marketthen the Rothenburg ob der Tauber Christmas Market (perhaps the best known in Germany and throughout Europe and which I already visited in 2004 and 2007), later the Augsburg Christmas Market and finally that of Dachau.
The Christmas markets, Christkindlmarkt, Marché de Noël, Christkindlesmarkt, Christkindlmarket or Weihnachtsmarkt, are set up during the four weeks of Advent. They are very popular in Germany, Austria and eastern France (Alsace region).
Even though it was quite late when we arrived at Dachau (around 8:30 p.m. Christmas markets in Germany usually close between 7:30-8:30 p.m.) before leaving our luggage in the DAH Inn Hotel We approached the square where the Dachau Christmas market is set up in case it was still open, and what was our surprise? The market was packed with people. I don’t know if it is due to the fact that it is small or if, on the contrary, it was due to the joy of its inhabitants.
The truth is that it was a great success to come here to enjoy for a long time this lively Christmas market where, with its tiny lights of a thousand colors that surround a score of stalls, the delicious aroma of sugared almonds, the glühwein which helps so much to warm us up on the cold German nights, the smiles of its people and the musical chords that filled the atmosphere created an atmosphere that awakened the most romantic side of Christmas.
Glühwein or mulled wine
A glühwein is an alcoholic drink that is traditionally drunk during the Advent period in German and other European Christmas markets. To make a glühwein or mulled wine, red wine (the most typical in Germany) or white wine is used, to which cinnamon, cloves, lemon peels and star anise are usually added. To prepare it, heat everything without letting it boil and add sugar to taste. Its price ranges between €2 and €3 plus a €1 deposit for the clay cup in which they offer it to you and which is returned to you if you want to hand over the cup and not take it as a souvenir.
Dachau Christmas Market Stalls
At this point in life, and having already visited almost twenty Christmas markets in Germany, I have no doubt that these German towns know quite well how to captivate their visitors. During Advent, the city of Dachau, like hundreds of German towns and cities, sets up its Christmas market with thousands of lights and dozens of decorated wooden stalls. Dachau’s Christmas Market is located next to the beautiful Town Hall building and under the watchful eye of the St. Jakob Parish Church.
At the stalls at the Dachau Christmas market you can buy beautiful Christmas decorations such as colored balls, candles, toys, small crafts and traditional German food typical of these dates.
I can’t tell you that he Dachau Christmas Market It is one of the ones that have caught me the most in my four trips to Germany, since those already mentioned in Rothenburg, Dinkelsbül, Nuremberg and some in Berlin seem insurmountable to me. But I can tell you that if what you want is to get to know the essence of the German people on any given day when its inhabitants go out into the street, wrapped up to their ears, to have a very warm coffee, to do their daily chores in a city. Beautiful, Dachau is a very good option to live that experience.
Conclusion
Dachau is much more than its concentration camp; It is a place that invites you to walk to discover the charms of its old town (considered a protected architectural complex since 1984), of its Castillo and his Royal Gardenof his St. Jakob Parish Church (17th century), from his Art gallery y District Museumthe beautiful facade of its City hall…But I will show you all this in a future article. For now I leave you with this image so that you can see the simplicity and beauty of one of the streets of this city as a preview of what will come then.
