  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans) (optional)


  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch (20×20 cm) square baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl or using a double boiler, melt the butter and then stir in the cocoa powder until the mixture is smooth. Allow it to cool for a few minutes.
  • Stir in the granulated sugar and mix until well combined.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; you want to avoid overdeveloping the gluten, which can make the brownies less tender.
  • If you’re adding chocolate chips or nuts, fold them into the batter.
  • Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick or cake tester inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached. The exact baking time may vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on it.
  • Once done, remove the brownies from the oven and allow them to cool in the pan on a wire rack. Once they’ve cooled, you can cut them into squares and enjoy!
