Cooking time

To make beef stew in a crock pot, you would typically combine chunks of beef, vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and onions, along with seasonings and broth or other liquids in the crock pot. The mixture is then cooked on a low heat setting for several hours, allowing the flavors to meld together and the meat to become tender. This slow cooking process results in a flavorful and hearty beef stew that is convenient to prepare, as it requires minimal hands-on cooking time.

  • 2 pounds of stew beef, cut into 1-inch pieces

  • 4 cups of beef broth

  • 1 onion, diced

  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 3 carrots, sliced

  • 3 potatoes, diced

  • 2 celery stalks, sliced

  • 1 cup of frozen peas (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons of tomato paste

  • 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon of dried thyme

  • 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

  • Place the stew beef, onion, garlic, carrots, potatoes, and celery in the crock pot.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper.
  • Pour the broth mixture over the beef and vegetables in the crock pot.
  • Cover and cook on low heat for 7-8 hours or on high heat for 4-5 hours, until the beef is tender.
  • If using frozen peas, add them to the crock pot during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • If you prefer a thicker stew, mix cornstarch with a little water to form a slurry, then stir it into the stew during the last 30 minutes of cooking to thicken the sauce.
  • Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  • Serve hot and enjoy your delicious beef stew!
