A hamburger is a sandwich made from ground meat or vegetable origin, bonded in the form of a steak cooked on the grill or on the grill, although it can also be fried or baked. Outside the Spanish-speaking realm, it is more common to find the American denomination burger, shortening of hamburger. It is presented in a light bread divided in two that has an oval shape. It is usually accompanied by onion rings, lettuce leaves, a tomato slice, slices of pickles and French fries. It is usually seasoned with some condiment, such as tomato sauce, mustard, relish, ketchup or mayonnaise, among others.1 If a sheet of processed cheese is put on, it becomes a hamburger with cheese (cheeseburger), 2 sometimes called yellow burger. The invention of the hamburger sandwich in the 19th century is controversial, since various authors claim to have been the first to have put a ground beef steak (hamburger steak) between two buns.3 The hamburger grew during the 20th century along with the appearance of the fast food concept and during that century it was acquiring a special symbolism. It is part of one of the iconic foods of American cuisine (along with fried chicken and apple pie) .1 The first restaurant chain to introduce the hamburger as a fast food food was White Castle in the 1990s. of 1920 (whose ideologue was Edgar Waldo “Billy” Ingram), 4 and later during the decade of 1940 with McDonald’s (taken over by executive Ray Kroc), 5 as well as Burger King.6 The hamburger is, today , a food so popular that it appears with its various variants in almost every culture on earth, as well as other foods, such as pizza, hot dog and tacos.
