To make baked potatoes in the oven, you typically start by washing and scrubbing the potatoes to remove any dirt. Then, you poke several holes in each potato with a fork to allow steam to escape during baking.

  • Russet potatoes (as many as needed)

  • Olive oil (optional)

  • Salt (optional)

  • Toppings of your choice (e.g., butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, bacon)

  • Preheat your oven to 375-425°F (190-220°C), depending on your preference and how crispy you want the potato skins to be.
  • Wash and scrub the potatoes thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt.
  • Using a fork, pierce each potato several times on all sides. This allows steam to escape during baking and prevents the potatoes from bursting.
  • If desired, rub each potato with a little olive oil and sprinkle with salt. This step is optional but helps to crisp up the skins and adds flavor.
  • Place the prepared potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Make sure there is enough space between the potatoes for air to circulate.
  • Bake the potatoes in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until they are tender when pierced with a fork or knife. The exact baking time will depend on the size of the potatoes and the temperature of your oven.
  • Once the potatoes are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly for a few minutes.
  • To serve, slice each potato open lengthwise with a knife and fluff up the insides with a fork. Add your favorite toppings such as butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, bacon, or any other toppings you like.
  • Serve the baked potatoes hot and enjoy!
