Cultural legacy of César Manrique

Just 6 km from Arrecife, in the small hamlet of Tahíche, is one of the must-sees on the island: the Cesar Manrique Foundation. This former house of the local artist, converted into an interesting museum, houses two collections: one of contemporary art that belonged to Manrique and another of works with his distinctive stamp. The building is located on a lava flow, the result of volcanic eruptions in the 19th century, and presents the traditional architecture of Lanzarote.

Manrique’s footprint continues in another attraction that must be visited in Lanzarote: the Jameos del Agua, located in Haría. Located inside a volcanic tunnel formed by the activity of the Corona volcano (609 m), this place has an interior lake created by marine seepage and shows a very characteristic geological formation. Here you can also find the jameíto, a species of endemic albino and blind crab, and you can appreciate the unique integration between nature and Manrique’s architecture. Also, take advantage of your visit to admire the magnificent Cave of the Greenswhich is also part of the Corona volcanic tube.

The tour of Manrique’s work culminates in Guatiza, with the Cactus Garden, his last major intervention on the island. This garden houses around 4,500 specimens of 450 species of cacti.

But we cannot finish this list without mentioning the jewel in the crown that awaits you in Yaiza and Tinajo: the Timanfaya National Park. This park is the only one in the Spanish Network of National Parks with a clear geological focus. The absence of vegetation, the rugged terrain and the color palette that adorns the area with ochres, reds and greys, give it an incomparable charm. Let yourself be captivated by the mountains of fireformed in the eighteenth century.

During your visit to Yaiza, don’t miss Playa Blanca, one of the southernmost points of the island, 38 km from Arrecife. Although in the past it was a fishing village, in recent decades it has evolved towards tourism. This corner boasts pristine white sand beaches and offers easy access to the small island of Lobos and neighboring Fuerteventura. You cannot miss visiting the points of Pechiguera and Papagayo, the latter, located 8 km to the southeast, is highly recommended, as it has one of the best beaches in Lanzarote.

Finally, other beaches in Lanzarote where you can relax are Caleta de Campo and Punta de Mujeres. These places are ideal for leaving stress behind during your holidays in the Canary Islands.
